Abstract

European cities face increasing heat-related risks. Hence, increased attention is paid to housing to mitigate heat stress. The focus is extending from building’s energy performance to climate-resilient housing strategies. In addition to indoor thermal comfort also public spaces, vegetation, and governance are playing a greater role in climateresilient housing. In many projects, however, climate-resilient housing, public spaces and social integration are not translated into residents’ daily lives. This thesis investigates ways in which block-scale housing can foster climate resilience, enhance public space quality and promote social inclusion. Using La Cigale cooperative in Vermont, Geneva this study employs a mixed-methods approach including policy analysis, resident surveys, and semistructured interviews with residents and various stakeholders. Rather than a lack of ambitious integrated climate change objectives on the part of Geneva’s housing policy, a gap appears to exist between the housing policy’s integrated objectives and their practical implementation in residential environments on an everyday scale. The thesis highlights that the residential block constitutes the operational scale at which climate-resilient housing, housing policy and social inclusion can be effectively coordinated. Therefor contributes to the field of climateresilient housing and addresses issues of implementation and of residents’ lived experiences to develop contextsensitive and equitable urban climate change adaptation strategies.
