Abstract

“You are my last hope !” Hope in the patient-caregiver relationship: The example of chronic pain – Hope is the positive expectation that something desirable will happen, even though it is not at all certain. In the sphere of psychology and caregiving, how can we understand hope? Every patient, every caregiver takes on board this attribute of hope according to their own history or personality. As soon as care is requested, this hope, which is supposed to counterbalance illness, gives us food for thought. In chronic illness, patients sometimes lose all hope, or they may cling to the hope of a cure. Patients present with a level of hope that triggers an echo-response in caregivers. Is their own preoccupation at play, or are they just responding to the demands of their patients? Should they reignite or maintain hope in their patients, and at what cost? We propose a reflection on the challenges of hope at the heart of the caregiving relationship, in order to try to understand the need to hope as a need that has to be accompanied.
