In Plato’s Sophist, some views about deception are presented in connection with images and falsehood. The general aim of this dissertation is twofold. The first is historical: to reconstruct an account of deception in the Sophist by analysing the relations which hold between deception, images, and falsehood, and therefrom to construct a general definition of deception. The second is philosophical: to analyse and define the varying types of deception that may be induced by the various kinds of imitators disclosed, including the sophist.
