Abstract

This master's thesis examines the role of ice hockey rivalries in the expression and reinforcement of territorial identities in French-speaking Switzerland and Ticino. Based on a qualitative research design combining semi-structured interviews and field observations, the study focuses on the rivalries between Geneva and Lausanne, and between Ambrì-Piotta and Lugano. Drawing on the concepts of identity, territoriality, belonging, and place attachment, it explores how supporters articulate their affiliations across different spatial scales. The findings show that rivalry primarily contributes to strengthening and making visible pre-existing territorial identifications rather than creating new identities. In both contexts studied, the local scale emerges as the main frame of identification, although the forms taken by rivalry vary according to regional specificities. In French-speaking Switzerland, rivalry is largely based on differentiation between two competing urban centres, whereas in Ticino it relies more heavily on distinctions related to values, lifestyles, and territorial representations.
