This study examines the extent to which the Dom Afonso Henriques stadium, home ground of Vitória Sport Clube in Guimarães, contributes to the production of a territorial identity. Grounded in social and cultural geography, it mobilises the notions of haut lieu (Debarbieux, 1993, 1995), geosymbol (Bonnemaison, 1981) and urban identity (Faye and Lacour, 2020) to analyse the mechanisms through which a sporting facility functions as a support for collective identification in a mid-sized city whose identity rests on a pre-existing national narrative. The qualitative study conducted between April and May 2026 combines semi-structured interviews, one informal exchange, two sessions of non-participant observation and an analysis of the symbolic productions associated with the club. The results show that the symbolic apparatus is coherent, stratified and effective beyond its captive audiences, but produces differentiated forms of identification according to the trajectories of the actors. The research highlights a process of symbolic co-construction between the institution and the supporters, as well as a defensive dimension of collective identity that was not anticipated.
