Like a missing piece in a puzzle, the history of the modern ecumenical movement remains incomplete without a thorough evaluation of the first Œcumenical Methodist Conference held in 1881. This study examines the often-overlooked significance of this first Œcumenical Methodist Conference for both world Methodism and the emergence of the modern ecumenical movement. Through historical research and drawing on archival minutes and other historical sources, the study closes a gap in the existing literature and offers a more comprehensive understanding of the emergence of the modern ecumenical movement as far as Methodism is concerned. The key findings of this study are that the naming of the Œcumenical Methodist Conference, its inclusion of deputations from sister denominations, and its vision for a confederation of Churches laid a foundation for the emergence of the modern ecumenical movement. The success of the first Œcumenical Methodist Conference in this study is demonstrated by its influence in shaping organic Methodism and interconfessional organic union in different parts of the world. Its significance for the contemporary ecumenical movement lies in its relevance to visible unity, the climate crisis, interreligious dialogue, and justice and peace.
