This paper explores the language of endometriosis as used by different communities in French. Key actors of health communication in this context are included (women with endometriosis, healthcare professionals, patient associations, journalists). From a corpus-based perspective, the approach combines two methods aiming at identifying lexical differences, keyword analysis and term extraction, which yield results of different kinds. While keywords aim at examining the most salient lexical differences in each community compared to the others, terms aim at exploring terminological usage in the subcorpora through the units recognised as terms. The observation of selected keywords reveals the diversity of themes associated with endometriosis in the subcorpora, from diagnosis and research methods in specialised discourse to feminist and gender equality issues in the press. Terms are investigated through their distributional environments in the subcorpora. Syntactical differences in the use of verbs such as opérer [operate] highlight usage specific to women with endometriosis and reflect, to some extent, their experiential expertise. Shared collocations across all subcorpora (e.g. rapport sexuel douloureux [painful sexual intercourse]) reveal differences in function through their broader distributional contexts: some uses, specific to healthcare professionals, reflect objective ways of assessing sexual function, while others, specific to patient associations, aim at challenging established assumptions. Overall, this paper sheds light on the specificities of the discourses on endometriosis in French, while offering new insights into the processes of term circulation and appropriation and providing a solid basis for further exploring their implications for public knowledge and collective understanding of the condition.
