This thesis explores the relationship between functional government spending and physical inactivity inequalities in Spain. We employ the data of Luis Cereijo, Ph.D. regarding the relative index of physical inactivity inequalities based on educational attainment or social class a novelty in this line of research. Data from the Spanish government and National Institute of Statistics was also leveraged. We begin by examining existing literature on the socioeconomic gradient of inactivity inequalities, as well as studies on the potential public health costs of sedentarism, and on the impact of government spending on physical activity. We then proceed to an empirical analysis of the relationship between different measures of functional government spending on the relative index of physical inactivity inequality, via two different empirical methods. The first is a multilevel regression analysis of the impact of functional spending per capita and the second is a 2 step pooled OLS regression analysis on the impact of spending composition. Our results indicate that functional government spending has an overall limited impact on physical inactivity inequalities, and that the two different socioeconomic markers used to calculate RII lead to differing levels of regional heterogeneity. This suggests that physical inactivity inequalities as measured by educational attainment and social class are influenced by different structural and regional factors outside of our models, highlighting the need for additional investigation. The novelty that our study provides by using the relative index of physical inactivity inequality as well as analysing its relationship with functional government spending makes this exploratory paper an important first step in expanding this line of research.
