Abstract

Streets are at the heart of urban life and reflect a society’s organizational choices. Long dominated by the “car-centric” paradigm, they were gradually reduced to their function of traffic circulation and parking, marginalizing their role as spaces for social interaction, conviviality, and biodiversity. Today, faced with challenges related to ecological transition, quality of life, and growing interest in these spaces, this vision is being questioned. Curbspaces, often overlooked in the discourse of urban planners, appear as valuable resources for transforming the city. Using the case of the Plan-Dessus neighborhood in Vevey, this study analyzes how these spaces can contribute to enhanced urbanity.

The results show that, despite a growing desire to diversify uses such as greening, terraces, renewed logistics, and social spaces; The car still occupies a dominant position, which slows the transformation of the Plan-Dessus neighborhood. However, there is a clear awareness of the need to evolve urban streets. In response to this need, curbspaces emerge as a support for numerous interests that require careful governance and planning.

This thesis thus proposes concrete avenues for reallocating curbspaces, advocating a renewed vision of urban planning particularly in favor of soft mobility, social interaction, and greenery. The flexible and integrated management of these spaces is strongly encouraged. In sum, this research highlights the strategic role of curbspaces in creating a more sustainable, inclusive city that is adapted to contemporary challenges.
