This thesis analyzes how Western globetrotters who participated in Clark cruises aboard the Cleveland from 1909 to 1912 helped shape an exotic and picturesque image of India and Japan, two iconis stops on the touriste world tour. The aim is to understand how thse representations contribute to constructing different forms of the exotic image associated with India and Japan. The study uses a qualitative approach combining textual and iconographic analysis. By comapring the analysis of twelve travel accounts and a corpus of 693 photographs, the study highlights a clear differentiation in reprensentations : India appears as a mystical, archaic and colonized land, while Japan is perceived as a refined, modern, and orderly Orient. These textual and visual images do not objectively document the reality of the countries visited, but produce a stereotypical vision in line with the expectations of the Western tourist gaze. They thus contribute to fixing visual proff of otherness in the traveler's album, stabilizing colonial fantasies in an aesthetic of exoticism.
