Abstract

This thesis focuses on urban walk, and the plural ways in which it can be experienced by different pedestrians or “mobile bodies,” drawing on the ethics of care. The research question is: How is the urban walk experience of different “mobile bodies” underpinned (or not) by care relationships in the context of Geneva?

To answer this question, five walking interviews were conducted in Geneva with participants who were more or less distant from the “able-bodied norm”. These interviews highlighted the difficulties encountered by certain “mobile bodies.” The result is that the city takes a better care of able-bodied people than others.

Overall, this study offers a critique of the currently popular notion of “universal accessibility,” which, although defending a high-minded cause, tends to be more of a label applied to projects that respect certain standards than a genuine program of inclusion of all “mobile bodies” in public spaces.
