A Smartphone-Based Lucid Dream Induction Study

Abstract

Lucid dreaming, the awareness of dreaming while in a dream, can occur spontaneously or intentionally by the use of cognitive-behavioral strategies. The present study evaluated the effectiveness of an original induction technique combining the Mnemonic Induction of Lucid Dreams (MILD) with Targeted Lucidity Reactivation (TLR) via the Oniri mobile application. Over three weeks, 60 participants engaged in a structured protocol at home, where baseline dream recall and dream lucidity were assessed in Week 0. Before sleep during Weeks 1 and 2, experimental groups engaged in pre-sleep lucidity training, with an embedded auditory cue (MILD+TLR) or without (MILD). Both groups were exposed to the same cue during sleep with the expectation that MILD with TLR would increase lucid dreams compared to MILD. Our results do not support this hypothesis, and we highlight the logistical challenges of translating a lab-based paradigm like TLR into a home setting, with directions for future research. Beyond evaluating the app-based intervention, this study analyzed the emotional tone of 3,423 dreams from 372 participants, with an average of 9 dreams per participant. Lucid dreams were associated with positive, cognitively driven emotions like Concentration and Determination, while non-lucid dreams featured more Awkwardness, a negative emotion. We provide evidence that the increased positive tone of lucid dreams is likely due to the experience of lucidity itself, rather than inter-individual trait differences. Lastly, we encourage dream researchers to continue the search for a reliable induction technique and collaborate with other dream laboratories, ‘citizen neuroscientists’ and platforms like Oniri, all of which provide a valuable approach to developing a standardized and unified approach to studying lucid dreams.
