Background: The Swiss Society for Addiction Medicine (SSAM) is committed to the scientifically sound and patient-oriented treatment of addiction disorders.

Position: In light of the latest scientific findings and international developments, the SSAM considers psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy (PAT) with classic psychedelics such as LSD or psilocybin and with the atypical psychedelic ketamine to be a therapeutic option for addiction disorders when guideline-based treatments do not provide sufficient stability. In addition, the SSAM advocates an open and evidence-based debate on the legalization and adequate regulation of classic and atypical psychedelics such as LSD, psilocybin, and MDMA, the most widely used entactogen in non-medical applications, in Switzerland. This includes both therapeutic applications and use outside of a medical context in order to promote harm reduction and enable access to safe and quality-controlled substances.
