The crafts a society produces are a reflection of the social and economic organization of any given culture and, for archaeologists, it provides an insight into what was valued (e.g. materials, practices, symbolism) within that society. In this article, we question the space held by craftspeople within Bell Beaker society around Mont-Blanc. Indeed, three major valleys are found around Mont-Blanc: the Arve valley (France), the Val d’Aosta (Italy), and the Rhone valley (Switzerland). All three were occupied by the Bell Beaker culture and yielded megalithic funerary structures from that period, demonstrating remarkable similarities in building architecture and the artefacts found within them. A question therefore arises: did the same craftspeople build these dolmens, engrave these stelae, and produce the intricate metalwork found in these sites? Were they itinerant? And furthermore, who commissioned these crafts and what does that imply in terms of societal organization? In this article, we describe the foundation of an ongoing project investigating the role craftspeople played in the Bell Beaker culture through three areas of study. The first explores the engraved anthropomorphic stelae found at each site and their implications in terms of the craftsmanship required to create them. The second looks at the people buried at one of the sites (Sion Petit-Chasseur, Rhone valley, Switzerland) and what the demographics and state of health of the population means in terms of societal organization. Finally, the third area of study questions how specific artefacts (for example those related to archery) can yield insights into the symbolic value of a particular activity or the identity of a specific individual.
