The main objective of the paper is to investigate whether the changes in political strategies observed in France with the creation of a new dominant social bloc, the bloc bourgeois, can be observed in other developed countries. To this effect, we connect differences in individual support for political parties (left/right and specific parties) with differences in support for various public policies, such as redistribution, unemployment benefits, the perception of the level in inequality, immigration/globalisation, education spending, and business regulation. We use a large survey dataset from different International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) waves from 1985 to 2020 in 11 OECD countries by focusing on the country-specific characteristics of the support for politics and policies. Our results show that the transformation of the left-right divide into a competition between what Piketty has called a brahmin left and a merchant right has not taken place everywhere, reflecting a strong cross-country heterogeneity in the preferences in the support for political parties. Policy preferences exhibit some common characteristics across countries, more particularly when looking at preferences for redistribution. As a result, political preferences are found to be weakly associated with policy preferences.
