Abstract

Between the 17th and 21st centuries, a wide variety of machines were built whose function was to evoke aesthetic experiences. This volume discusses the often highly artistic design of such devices and explores the processes and phenomena of perception they triggered. The broad historical period covered serves, on the one hand, to reflect on aesthetic, epistemic, and structural connections. On the other hand, the discussion also aims to highlight the differences between the historical contexts. The academic exchange on the topic is interdisciplinary, bringing together perspectives from art, knowledge, and technology history, film, theater, and literary studies, as well as philosophy, psychoanalysis, and psychiatry. This volume also provides an opportunity for intellectual exchange between recognized specialists and young scholars.
