Led by the Geneva Science-Policy Interface at the University of Geneva, this study explores how scientific knowledge is mobilised in support of multilateral policymaking across the Geneva ecosystem. Based on survey data from professionals working in intergovernmental organisations, academia, NGOs, platforms and think tanks, it offers a snapshot of current practices, institutional roles and shared challenges in science-policy engagement.

Findings highlight a growing recognition of the strategic importance of this work, yet also reveal persistent limitations—particularly in terms of funding, specialised staff, and institutional support. While international organisations are closely involved in framing and implementing policy, academics and NGOs contribute by shaping agendas, building networks, and introducing tools and concepts into policy practice. However, efforts remain fragmented, under-recognised, and difficult to evaluate.

The report calls for greater investment in dedicated capacities, more effective collaboration practices, and the recognition of knowledge brokering as a professional field. It also points to Geneva’s potential as a hub for science-policy practice—an ecosystem where complementarities can be better leveraged to support more informed and effective global governance.
