Abstract

This thesis explores how Indigenous Evangelical communities, including Pentecostals, interpreted violence, suffering, and resistance in Ayacucho during Peru’s internal armed conflict (1980–2000). Drawing on historical records, interviews, and theological analysis, it argues that these communities developed contextual theological interpretations in response to the terror inflicted by both Shining Path and the Peruvian state. These interpretations often emerged from a hermeneutical process in which the biblical text and lived experience mutually informed one another. Some believers responded with pacifism or neutrality, while others, especially Pentecostals, interpreted the violence in eschatological and spiritual terms. This study also examines the legacy of these theologies and their relationship to ecumenical ideas, self-criticism, and the postwar reflections encouraged by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Ultimately, this work highlights the theological agency of marginalized communities and the diversity of Christian responses to political violence.
