Christianity is one of the predominant religions in Nigeria, with a population exceeding 86 million adherents, establishing the nation as a leading hub for Christian communities throughout Africa. The historical development of Christianity in Nigeria has been profoundly influenced by various missionary movements, including the Portuguese Roman Catholic Mission (1485), British Church Missionary Society (CMS, 1842), Methodist Mission (1845), American Presbyterian Mission (1846), the Baptist Mission (1850), and the Sudan Interior Mission (SIM). These missions established a variety of denominational expressions of Christianity across the country. Of particular relevance to this research is the Anglican Church in Nigeria, founded in 1842 by the CMS.

In 1979, the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) became an autonomous province within the global Anglican Communion, initially comprising sixteen dioceses. Since then, it has experienced remarkable expansion, now consisting of over 170 dioceses organized into fourteen internal ecclesiastical provinces, including several mission stations overseas. This study focuses on the Diocese of Ife without losing sight of the broader realities of Christianity and the Anglican Communion in Nigeria. Despite the growth and structural development of Christianity, many Christians in regions like Ife-land still revert to traditional religious practices when under duress, a tendency viewed by the Church of Nigeria and many, as spiritual compromise and “apostasy from Christian Faith”.1 This phenomenon demands a re-evaluation of the effectiveness and depth of evangelism and discipleship efforts. In 2018, the Commission on World Mission and Evangelism (CWME) of the World Council of Churches proposed a transformative paradigm for mission under the theme of “Transforming Discipleship,” which present Christian discipleship as an ongoing to living in the way of Jesus, touching every area of life and oriented toward Justice, Community, and transformation. This study is motivated by the curiosity of the researcher to see if this transformative paradigm is a reliable tool for specific contexts like Ife-land.
