Three varieties proved to be interesting for green asparagus production: Lucullus, Junnon and Larac. High density planting (3.3 plants/sq.m. double row) is not recommended while not more productive than single row planted crop (2.7 plants/sq.m.). In the flatland of the upper Rhone valley, the variety Backlim, very good for white asparagus production, yielded poor results when used for green production: the sprouts are short with open ends and prone fo frost damage.

Fusarium diseases were monitored and none of the tested varieties was fully resistant. Lucullus was the least damaged by Stemphylium and Backlim the most by rust (Puccinia asparagi).
