Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by the progressive destruction of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas, leading to permanent insulin dependence. Until recently, treatment was based on managing symptoms and monitoring complications. However, the emergence of early detection and intervention strategies is ushering in a new era in the management of type 1 diabetes.
