Kinetics of the Rhodamine B-Ozone Chemiluminescent Reaction in Acetic Acid

Abstract

The kinetics of the chemiluminescent reaction of Rhodamine with ozone in acetic acid is investigated. It can be shown that a reaction mechanism, involving at least seven steps, is compatible with the kinetic, spectral and CL emission data. Rate constants, activation energies and entropies of the initial steps are determined. The stoichiometry of the reaction is found to be twelve moles of ozone per mole of Rhodamine-B, indicating that the reaction proceeds through several ozonisation steps. The CL species seems to result from the ozonolysis of an intermediary which is the product of ozone attack on the C=N bond of Rhodamine. Analytical expressions relating CL intensity to initial Rhodamine-B and ozone concentrations are derived and tested experimentally.
