Abstract

This thesis explores the effectiveness of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) as a non-invasive, radiation-free method for forensic age estimation. It specifically addresses cases involving migrants, legal age verification, and child protection. Focusing on the ossification stages of various epiphyseal regions, the research uses advanced imaging sequences such as T1-TSE, FSE PD, and T2-weighted spoiled gradient echo to analyze the maturation patterns of growth plates in the knee and wrist. The findings establish significant correlations between ossification stages and chronological age, highlighting MRI's potential to improve the precision of forensic age estimation. While the study demonstrates the reliability of MRI for population-specific age assessments, it also emphasizes the need for broader validation across diverse demographic groups. Ultimately, this research advocates for the creation of standardized MRI protocols specifically tailored to forensic age estimation, ensuring ethical, accurate, and consistent applications in legal contexts.
