This study explores the interplay between interoception, embodiment, and emotional prosody in vocal emotional expression. Emotional prosody, the modulation of vocal elements like intonation and rhythm, conveys emotions that listeners interpret through embodied mechanisms. Interoception, or the awareness of internal bodily states, provides physiological feedback crucial for emotional processing. Twenty-two participants vocalized pseudowords and onomatopoeias in anger, happiness, and neutral conditions while accelerometers measured throat and sternum vibrations. Participants also reported perceived localization and intensity of these sensations. Results revealed that anger-related vocalizations elicited higher vibrational intensity in the sternum compared to neutral expressions, with interoceptive awareness influencing these patterns significantly. However, overall vibrational strength did not differ significantly among emotions. The findings highlight the role of interoceptive feedback in shaping emotional experiences and the embodied nature of emotional prosody, offering insights into how internal bodily states influence external emotional expressions and individuals’ capacity to perceive and locate these productions.
