Abstract

This structural interpretation work of the southwestern termination of the North Alpine Molasse Basin is based on the analysis of 2D seismic reflection data available up to 2018. It is part of the Geneva Cantonal Program for geothermal energy development. By building a 3D structural geological model, this study reveals the internal architecture of the surrounding thrust structures and proposes a significant revision of the previously established fault framework, highlighting a more complex and segmented vision of the strike-slip faults affecting the region.

The results provide new insights into the structural evolution of the basin during the Miocene and carry major implications for geothermal exploration strategies. They enable a more precise identification of the most favorable targets for resource development through drilling. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the impact of structural compartmentalization on flow models within the Mesozoic aquifer units, paving the way for more accurate and effective resource management.
