ESR study of the triphenylgermyl radical in a single crystal of triphenylgermane

Abstract

X-irradiation of single crystals of triphenylgermane yields the triphenylgermyl radical (C6H5)3 Ge. The 73Ge hyperfine coupling parameters show that, as expected, the radical is non-planar and similar to (C6H5)3 Si and (C6H5)3 P+. Quadrupole coupling effects were not observed showing that, as expected, the quadrupole coupling constant is small. On standing a further unidentified germanium-centered radical slowly appears whose ESR parameters are also given.
