The book Jebel al-Mutawwaq — A Fourth Millennium BCE Village and Dolmen Field Six Years of Spanish-Italian Excavations (2012–2018), edited by Andrea Polcaro, Juan Ramon Muniz and Alessandra Caselli, is a significant compilation of research conducted between 2012 and 2018 at this key site. Discovered by Jack W. Hanbury-Tenison in 1986, Jebel al-Mutawwaq has become a central reference site for studying agro-pastoral societies in the southern Levant during the late Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age I (c. 3600–2900 BCE). The site spans approximately 20 hectares and features an extensive range of architectural elements including 200 structures, predominantly oval or double-apse houses from the Early Bronze IA period, communal buildings, a settlement wall, and around a thousand dolmens. Despite previous disturbances due to cultivation, these remains provide invaluable insights into protohistoric architecture. The book is structured into eight chapters and an introduction. The introduction, authored by Andrea Polcaro and Juan Ramon Muniz, situates Jebel al-Mutawwaq within its broader scientific context, emphasizing the profound social transformations evident in the site’s architectural and topographical features. The sudden abandonment of the site around 2900 BCE raises questions about the failed urbanization process and its implications for the village’s development.
