Baumer's study of Greece's small rural sanctuaries is based on an archaeological survey of four regions - Attica, Arkadian, Argolis and Kynouria - with most of the evidence recovered from Attica. Focusing purely on archaeological rather than documentary evidence, the book presents the archaeological data by settlement before discussing the sanctuaries' architecture and votive offerings. Baumer also discusses and compares the relationship of sanctuaries with settlements in each region, the existence of sanctuary networks and their social context.
