Abstract

The European Sociological Association celebrates 30 years since its founding and the Research Network on the Sociology of Consumption has been around for 29 of them. RN05 was among the first research networks to come together in 1995, and we grew fast. In 2002, at a midterm meeting in Bergen, it is said that all our members could fit into three taxis. Today, at 189 members, we would need two double-decker buses. These three decades have been prolific, introducing new conceptual approaches to consumption, covering different types of consumption domains and dynamics, and welcoming research well beyond the confines of the European continent. We take this opportunity to look back and consider what sociology has brought to the study of consumption. We then spring forward to imagine what the future might hold for our community.
