Abstract

La Peña de los Enamorados (Antequera, province of Málaga), a limestone promontory rising 874 m.a.s.l, stands out in the Andalusian landscape, both for its strategic position at the intersection of the two main axes that run through this region and for its unique orography, which gives it the singular shape of an anthropomorphic face looking towards the sky. Its archaeological importance was already attested by its connection with the Menga Dolmen, oriented exactly towards the "chin", locally known as ‘Tajo Colorado’ (‘Red Gash’), where the Matacabras rock art shelter precedes the construction of the dolmen. During the last 40 years the archaeological studies around La Peña, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016 together with the Dolmens and the El Torcal formation, have always been partial, focusing on specific periods or areas of the mountain. For this reason, in 2024 we organised survey campaigns with the aim of synthesising the enormous and diachronic archaeological record that La Peña de los Enamorados presents and to create an archaeological cartography in order to bring together and, if possible, increase knowledge about this unique site. This is the subject of our present master thesis
