Part of an ongoing research project centred around Banque Cantonale Vaudoise (BCV), this thesis studies the usage of one kind of deictic marker, demonstratives, in the English translations of French-language shareholder letters. Specifically, it documents how the usage of demonstratives in those translations departs from genre-specific English-language norms, provides statistical evidence that distal demonstratives are underused in translations, and explores the impact of this on the effectiveness of those texts. It also records, reconstitutes and organises the corpora used so far in the BCV project to minimise the duplication of effort and facilitate the conducting of more ambitious corpus-based studies by future researchers.
