Abstract

The aim of this Master's thesis is to study flood risk management in the municipalities of Cotonou (Akpakpa) and Sèmé-Podji in Benin. Flooding is a major issue in these localities, endangering people's lives and property. This state of affairs has been brought about by a number of natural and man-made factors. This research will begin by reviewing current knowledge of natural risk and flood management in Benin, focusing in particular on flood prevention and mitigation strategies, as well as awareness-raising and adaptation initiatives in the region. This will be followed by a discussion of the issues involved, highlighting the particular challenges faced by the municipalities of Cotonou (Akpakpa) and Sèmé-Podji in managing flood risks, as well as the research objectives. For a better understanding of the key concepts, terms such as 'natural risks', 'risk management' and many others will be clarified in order to create a conceptual framework for the study as a whole. Finally, the research methodology will be described, specifying the methods and tools used to collect primary and secondary data, as well as the approach adopted, which includes field surveys, interviews with local experts, documentary studies and scientific analyses.
