The history of the study of nature in Frenchlanguage from 1730 to 1760 is marked by a number of different authors who gave very different connotations and contours to the question of the actuality of scientific knowledge. This article attempts to sketch some of these lines of force that gradually transformed the study of nature from exteriority to interiority, from simplicity to abstraction, and from spectacle to interpretation.
