Abstract

This article places Louis Jurine's posthumously published work, his Histoire abrégée des poissons du lac léman, in the context of natural history since the Renaissance. This work was situated between the Latin tradition of natural history, which represents the universalizing scientific culture, and popular practices, particularly those linked to the economic activity of fishing. We show how Jurine's work was at the crossroads of methods, benefiting from both scientific ichthyological culture and popular traditions.
