Abstract

This article examines the controversy between two early 19th-century scientists, the surgeon Louis Jurine and the naturalist Henri-Albert Gosse. This controversy over monsters is reminiscent of the 18th-century controversies between the theories of preformation and epigenesis, and reveals the strong influence of Charles Bonnet's thinking on early 19th-century Genevan scientists.
