Abstract

Orobanche cyrnea Jeanm., Habashi & Manen is described as new species. It grows exclusively on Santolina corsica Jord. & Fourr., an cyrno-sardous endemic. Orobanche cyrnea is a Corsican endemic and its distribution is restricted to the Bozio region in the centre of the island. Its monophagy and morphological characteristics are compared with the Orobanche nearest species : O. santolinae, O. artemisiae-campestris, O. amethystea, O. minor, O. pubescens. The main distinctive morphological characters of O. cyrnea are the short calyx (6-8 mm), the little corolla (13-16 mm) purple (except the white base), wide (7-8 mm), with a regularly curved dorsal line, with short lobes (1-2 mm), the stamen with hairy, non glandulous, filament in the half basal part, glabrous above, and the white yellowish stigma. Seeds are alveolate with a pitted ornamentation, as in the Abu Sbaih & Jury C type. Its systematic position in the Angustatae subsection is investigated through morphological characteristics and rbcL sequences molecular data. O. cyrnea don't belong clearly to any Beck-Mannagetta's groups and has a distinct position with intermediate characters between grex Arcuatae and grex Minores.
