Abstract

This article explores the advantages of family mentoring—a voluntary practice involving providing hospitality and support outside formal foster institutions—in aiding the integration of unaccompanied young asylum seekers residing in Switzerland. It introduces the concept of intercultural mentoring, which is based on the notion of giving and establishing quasi-family ties, emphasizing its potential to facilitate socialization and civic integration for these young individuals. By examining how hospitality is practiced through intercultural mentoring, the article draws attention to the development of affective ties that go beyond conventional family bonds like blood ties or legal adoption. It underscores the significance of the reciprocal exchange of social knowledge, highlighting how host families serve as new social actors in this process. The article concludes by conceptualizing intercultural mentoring as an emerging civic practice founded on the mutual exchange of social relationships, sharing of cultural knowledge, and expansion of social capital beyond national affiliations and family connections.
