Influence of arbuscular and ericoid mycorrhiza formation on levels of photosynthetic pigments in host plants

Abstract

The aim of the present work was to determine whether host plants react to endomycorrhizal infection by modifying their photosynthetic activity. The effect of arbuscular and ericoid mycorrhizas on the content of photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a and carotenoid) was studied in Ananas comosus (L.) Merr and Vaccinium corymbosum L., respectively. The former was colonized by Glomus sp. (LPA21) and the latter by Hymenoscyphus ericae (LPAe2). When the fungi began to colonize host roots, no endomycorrhizal effect was observed on shoot growth nor on the level of photosynthetic pigments. When infection reached a maximum, both shoot growth and photosynthetic pigment contents of infected plants were stimulated. Subsequently, the level of photosynthetic pigments was maintained but increments in shoot growth continued in mycorrhizal plants. Similar results were obtained for both types of endomycorrhizae.
