Abstract

The estimated number of cryptocurrency users continues to increase and there is now a wide range of tools to manage the users’ assets. This growth is attracting more and more new users with different profiles and needs. Studies identified a gap between the high adoption rate and the low level of actual usage of cryptocurrency wallets. This gap is the result of a poor User Experience (UX). Researchers studied the theoretical and practical impacting factors leading to this observation. We aim to contribute to the knowledge base of the domain of UX and cryptocurrency wallet by conducting a User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) with the participation of actual users. It includes specific sections using the 5-Point Likert scale and targeting demographic; general UX; key management; perspicuity; efficiency; dependability; attractiveness and usability. Results reveal that there are issues with key management and guidance leading to a lack of trust, perspicuity, and dependability. We had the opportunity to interview Matvey Sivoraksha, CEO of Temple Wallet, to bridge research and industry. Basing on literature, our UEQ and industry observations, we provide some design recommendations for different processes to address not only the lack of guidance, personalization and trust, but also a cumbersome initial setup and key management. The knowledge base of UX and cryptocurrency wallets is growing and becoming more and more reliable so that the industry can draw on it when designing cryptocurrency wallets. The collaboration between scientific research and industry should lead to improved User Experience (UX) and meet user needs.
