Investigating Ultrafast Photoinduced Charge-Transfer Processes in Condensed Phase

Abstract

Ultrafast photoinduced charge-transfer processes are investigated using time-resolved electronic and vibrational spectroscopy in the condensed phase. The role of a single solvent parameter, i.e., dielectric constant, on both the ground- and excited-state proton transfer is studied using a well-characterised propyl acetate/ butyronitrile solvent mixture. Solvent-induced excited-state symmetry-breaking in quadrupolar molecules is investigated, and we compared transient infrared and Raman spectroscopies for real-time visualisation of excited-state symmetry-breaking. In addition, bimolecular electron transfer between chiral electron donors and acceptors is performed to look for stereo-selectivity in the initial, static stage of electron transfer quenching. Electron transfer in various donor-acceptor systems is also studied to extend our understanding of the donor-acceptor interactions in non-polar solvents.
