The main idea of this thesis is that in Italo Calvino's literary work space represents a true expressive coordinate, for historical, social, biographical, and literary reasons. Starting from this assumption and engaging with the main critical studies that relate literature and geography, the thesis analyzes and interprets the setting space of Italo Calvino's entire narrative work through a series of visual elaborations that serve as tools to question the work from a new critical perspective. Some of the static visualizations included in the thesis are available in interactive mode at Atlante Calvino. Letteratura e Visualizzazione (atlantecalvino.unige.ch), a project funded by the SFNS and directed by Professor Francesca Serra. From 2017 to 2020, the project conducted a series of experiments on Italo Calvino's work,by exploiting the interaction between literary criticism and data visualization.
