Abstract

Transgender and non-binary people (TGNB) experience lifelong difficulties and discrimination related to their condition. These include discrimination and/or abuse, difficulties in accessing the labor market as well as structural barriers to access treatment (and during).

In order to improve the care of underage TGNB patients in Geneva, the objective of this work is to deepen our understanding of the medical gender transition experience. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 4 transgender boys aged 16-17 years. Through phenomenological interpretive data analysis, we identified four experiential group themes: 1. Needs; 2. Experienced barriers; 3. Facilitators; 4. Mid/long-term experience of gender transition. Training and awareness-raising of healthcare personnel and the use of scientific recommendations appear to be a key response to many of the barriers identified in this study.
