Abstract

The rate of the reaction between methyl tosylate and lithium bromide has been measured in various aprotic solvents. There is no simple correlation between rate and dielectric constant in aprotic solvents with low dielectric constant. In propylene carbonate the reaction is much slower than would be predicted on the basis of solvent activity coefficients. Solvation of substrate and transition state to play a role in determining the reaction rate in this solvent.
