Abstract

A transition to a cleaner production of electricity is one of the key messages delivered in future energy scenarios to address increasingly worsening risks of climate change. This doctoral thesis focuses on solar photovoltaic (PV) in Switzerland, which is perceived as a promising technology for its future electricity system. Drawing on several strands of research (i.e., sustainability transition research, technological adoption studies, science and technology studies, environmental discourse studies, and quantitative energy and climate modelling studies) as well as employing quantitative and qualitative methods, the overall aim of this thesis is to describe empirically the socio-technical transition dynamics around solar PV in Switzerland, through four different projects. The results and discussion of this thesis provide insights into short-term and practical actions to spur the uptake of PV as well as different long-term socio-political transformations that a transition to PV might entail.
