Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop and validate the Asimov test through a non-verbal “Turing test” evaluating the social, cognitive, and affective development of artificial agents. Important aspects of clinical and human developmental psychology are taken into consideration to reach conclusive results about different developmental issues observed in artificial agents and human beings. The analysis of the actions of artificial agents is based on the Projective Consciousness Model (PCM), which is identified as a mathematical model of embodied consciousness. The sample of participants recruited in this study consists of 40 individuals who were expected to evaluate different situations involving two artificial agents using the 27 questions included in the Asimov test. Several videos are projected to the participants, as the focus is on two interacting artificial agents and two objects. Different combinations of PCM parameters are being presented to explore behaviors characteristics that could be either adaptive or maladaptive. The main conclusion of the study is that artificial agents have similarities in the emotional, social, and cognitive development to that of young human beings.
