This working paper is an advanced (not yet final) draft of the introductory chapter for Unequal

Democracies: Public Opinion, Responsiveness, and Redistribution in An Era of Rising Economic

Inequality, to be published by Cambridge University, with Lupu and Pontusson as editors. The

appendix lists the chapters that will be part of the volume (and their authors). The introductory

chapter provides an overview of trends in inequality and redistribution over the last three

decades and summarizes the main themes developed in the rest of the volume.
