Authors have used literary dialect for centuries to represent different speech communities in literature, and to contribute to the character or setting development of a literary work. This tool provides a complex challenge to translators, who must determine if and how to reproduce literary dialect in translation. This analysis looks at the different options available to translators, then presents a linguistic analysis to quantitively compare literary dialect present in a source and target text. Using the Quebec play Les Belles-Soeurs for a case study, literary dialect is examined in both texts and methods for translation are identitified. Reasons for the translators’ choices to use different methods are proposed and discussed.
