This paper discusses some of the challenges translators and subtitlers face when subtitling French criminal procedural TV shows for an English audience through an analysis of the highly successful TV show Engrenages. The translation strategies used to translate legal jargon within the series are analyzed through three different optics: legal translation, fiction à substrat professionnel (FASP), and subtitling. Particular focus is placed on legal extralinguistic cultural references, which are culture-bound terms. The purpose of this analysis is to determine whether retaining some of the show’s alterity is interesting for the viewer, and which translation strategies are most successful in maintaining the translator’s overall strategy and viewer accessibility.
