Abstract

Primary alcohols can be conveniently oxidized to carboxylic acids using solid KMnO₄/CuSO₄·5H₂O/KOH in an organic solvent; 1,4- and 1,5-diols can be selectively oxidized to the corresponding lactones using appropriate mixtures of KMnO₄/CuSO₄·5H₂O without added base.
