Oxidation of amines to imines with hypervalent iodine

Abstract

PhIO, either atone or in conjunction with RuCl2(PPh3)3 is efficient for dehydrogenation of secondary, activated amines to imines. PhIO also effects oxidative decarboxylation of phenylalanine ethyl ester to benzyl cyanide. The mechanistic significance of this latter transformation, which does not occur with other hypervalent iodine oxidants is discussed.
